Discussion post:

For the first unit of photography we will be looking at the formal elements.  The formal elements are:Shape, Lines, Form, Pattern, Colour, Texture,  Depth, Tone, reflection and movement.. In photography the formal elements give you a way of explaining the components that make up the photo that you have taken. All photos that are taken are made up of some or one of these elements. the idea behind these formal elements is to give photographers a way of explaining what they are seeing.

Lines: Lines are wherever we look, they give photos depth and make up patterns. although lines is a element on its own, it also helps to make up other elements. Lines are also found in natural places such as leaves and in peoples skin i.e., the creases in someone's hand. although it is thought that lines have to be straight, its not typically true.

Shape: Shape gives the image that we are looking at a outline. it also gives the image a definition. shape is used in everything that we see. in photography the angle of a camera can completely alter the way the shape of a object is seen.

Form:  Form is also seen everywhere. its the 3-D effect of a picture. It doesn't matter what the picture is of as form gives all pictures definition where necessary.

The above is some examples of how the formal elements are used in photography, It shows how they look in the photo and the effect they have on the way they are taken.  Overall the formal elements are around us everywhere however we don't always appreciate how they look. Its not until we look at these elements singularly in a photo that we can realise the effect they can have on a image.
